HP OmniBook Ultra
After owning my previous computer for over 3 years, I decided it was finally time to upgrade to something a little more modern, especially since the previous one was nearing 9 years old. It was fun to see how far the old unit could be taken, but I wanted something with a little bit more power.
The new computer is an HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 2:
- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V (8) @ 4.80 GHz
- 32 GB LPDDR5 @ 8533MHz
- 14" 3K (2880 x 1800) OLED Touchscreen @ 120 Hz
- 2TB NVMe SSD
This was another used PC that I purchased off of eBay. I found a great deal on it for under $1000, and I ended up selling the XPS 13 to put some of the cash toward the new one.
Initial Impressions
Definitely an improvement as far as the chipset goes. I am still running Fedora 43 on the new machine, and I could immediately tell the difference when searching within the KDE/Plasma Kickoff menu, or when launching an application like Chrome. Most actions felt like they were nearly instant.
The screen is also much better than the old laptop. Although the XPS 13 was a 4K display, it was not an OLED panel at 120Hz, and the difference is huge. Colors are much more vibrant, and all on-screen animations or movements are extremely smooth.
Main Purpose
This will remain my personal PC, giving me a place to keep all of my data or personal projects separate from my work machine.
Given that the new laptop is significantly faster than the XPS 13 was, and has hardware that should remain supported for several more years, I'm most likely going to hang onto this one for another 3 years or so before I look into purchasing another.
